Manila: The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI) has confirmed the detection of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) Type A Subtype H5N9 in Camaligan, Camarines Sur. This marks the first recorded instance of this strain in the country.
According to Philippines News Agency, the BAI announced that the strain is highly pathogenic among birds but does not affect humans. This confirmation came after the BAI-Animal Disease Diagnosis and Reference Laboratory reported positive results from duck samples collected on April 30, 2025, during a routine surveillance conducted by the DA Regional Field Office Bicol.
In response to the detection, the DA-Bicol region has implemented intensive surveillance within a one-kilometer quarantine zone. This includes close monitoring and disinfection measures to prevent the spread of HPAI or bird flu. On Tuesday, authorities swiftly culled and disposed of the remaining ducks in the affected farms to contain the outbreak.
The BAI has called on the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual poultry deaths or sickness to local authorities. The bureau emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the Philippines’ poultry industry from avian influenza threats through collaboration with other government agencies and stakeholders.
As of April 25, ongoing cases of the bird flu H5N1 strain have been reported in two barangays in Mexico, Pampanga, affecting ducks and native chickens.
