Davao city: The Department of Agriculture (DA) 11 in the Davao Region emphasized the significance of enhancing the coconut industry, recognizing it as more than just a traditional crop but a crucial element in rural development. In a statement, DA-11 regional director Macario Gonzaga highlighted the enduring importance of coconut as a key crop in the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, the 2024 data from the Philippine Statistics Authority reveals that the region produced over 2.2 million metric tons of non-food industrial crops, with coconut accounting for 87.2 percent of the total. Despite these accomplishments, Gonzaga pointed out the serious challenges farmers face, including low prices, aging trees, climate change, pests, diseases, and limited post-harvest access.
Speaking at the commencement of the two-day Techno Forum on Coconut Innovations and Product Exhibit on Wednesday, Gonzaga stressed the necessity of multi-sectoral collaboration. He emphasized that partnerships among farmers, government, the private sector, and institutions are vital for addressing the challenges faced by coconut farmers.
Gonzaga praised the efforts of the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) for training over 4,600 farmers. He also highlighted partnerships with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and international experts aimed at developing export-quality, high-value coconut husk products. These collaborations demonstrate that the future of the coconut industry lies in value creation, branding, and sustainability beyond traditional farming.
The event featured a product exhibit showcasing various coconut-based innovations, including food products and eco-friendly materials, showcasing stories of resilience, innovation, and transformation. Gonzaga encouraged farmer-leaders to act as conduits of knowledge and change, urging them to share insights with their cooperatives and communities.
The two-day techno forum concluded on Thursday, marking a significant step towards rural transformation through the coconut industry.
