Baguio city: The Department of Health (DOH) has reminded the public to take precautions against illnesses commonly associated with the cold season, as temperatures in the city and other parts of the Cordillera continue to drop. DOH-Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) Director Dr. Amelita Pangilinan emphasized the need for residents to be cautious as the weather changes, which can trigger various ailments that are preventable with proper care and hygiene.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Pangilinan advised residents, particularly the elderly and children, to wear warm clothing and head covers such as bonnets to protect against the cold. She highlighted the importance of maintaining good health practices, including regular handwashing, adequate rest, consuming nutritious food, wearing face masks when necessary, keeping the environment clean, taking only prescribed medications, and staying hydrated.
The DOH-CAR issued an advisory listing flu and common colds, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis as prevalent illnesses during the cold months of November to March. These conditions, marked by symptoms like fever, cough, runny nose, sneezing, and skin dryness, are often exacerbated by dust, cold wind, and dry weather. The agency urged the public to seek consultation at health centers for accurate diagnosis and appropriate medication.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Baguio City recorded a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius early Monday and a daytime high of 26 degrees. The city is expected to experience even colder temperatures, potentially dropping to single digits, during the ‘amihan’ season from late January to early March. This period is also associated with a rise in flu and influenza-like illnesses, underscoring the importance of the DOH’s advisory.
