Paris: Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. emphasized the importance of cross-regional convergence to address emerging threats and mitigate vulnerabilities, during his keynote speech at the Paris Defense and Strategy Forum (PDSF) in France. Teodoro highlighted the necessity for nations to unify their efforts to protect human life and uphold international order amidst recent and ongoing conflicts.
According to Philippines News Agency, Teodoro advocated for a broad interpretation of convergence, which involves unity of purpose and collaborative efforts to achieve common goals using unique capabilities and expertise. He emphasized the responsibility of countries to protect the public and preserve global order without the need for formal treaties, stating that immediate and actionable measures are required.
Teodoro cited the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as an example, illustrating how it has impacted Filipinos through direct threats to safety and increased commodity prices. He noted the significant contributions of Filipinos in the international workforce, particularly in maritime and healthcare sectors, and acknowledged the casualties suffered by Filipinos in global conflicts.
He underscored the importance of international law and institutions for nations like the Philippines, which rely on the global system to protect their citizens abroad while strengthening their own capabilities. Under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s leadership, the Philippines is focused on enhancing its defense capabilities to safeguard overseas Filipinos.
