Comelec Suspends Voter Registration in Iran Amid Middle East Tensions

Manila:<Text>

Voter registration in Iran has been temporarily suspended due to tensions in the Middle East, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Wednesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco stated that voter sign-up activities in Tehran are suspended until further notice following advice from the Philippine Embassy in Iran. He also mentioned that voter registration in Israel is suspended until March 7.

Consular services and voter registration remain available for Filipinos in other Middle Eastern countries. Laudiangco urged Filipinos in the Middle East to remain vigilant, stay informed about their regional situations, be wary of false information, and rely on credible sources.

He further advised paying attention to notices and advisories from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Embassy or Consulate, and encouraged seeking assistance from helplines if in distress.

Tensions in the Middle East escalated in late February following a major military operation by the United States and Israel on Iran. In response, Iran launched drones and missiles towards Israel and targeted U.S. military facilities in the region.
