Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has expressed its support for a congressional proposal to reschedule the inaugural Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections to September. This move is aimed at ensuring the elections are conducted smoothly this year.
According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia stated that while the commission does not have the authority to set election dates, their priority is to ensure the Bangsamoro elections occur within the year. He acknowledged that the commission is currently focused on preparations for the national and local elections scheduled for May 2028. Garcia emphasized that next year is crucial for these preparations, and thus, Comelec supports Congress's initiative to reschedule the Bangsamoro polls.
When questioned about the commission's readiness should the proposal be approved, Garcia affirmed their preparedness but expressed hope for clarity on any additional parliamentary laws that might impact their preparations. The proposal to move the Bangsamoro elections to September 28 was advocated by Lanao del Sur First District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong and Lanao del Sur Second District Representative Yasser Alonto Balindong.
House Bill No. 7236 stipulates that the Bangsamoro Transition Authority will continue to act as the interim government until newly elected officials take office on December 1. Initially, the poll body set the Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections for March 30, following a directive from the Supreme Court.
