Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has initiated the formation of task forces across various regions in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to intensify efforts against vote-buying as the BARMM Parliamentary Elections (BPE) approach in just over two weeks.

According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia emphasized the establishment of these task forces as a clear message to candidates and their supporters about the poll body's commitment to tackling vote-buying. Garcia stated that the task forces, led by the Executive Director of the Project Management Office (PMO), will operate in multiple provinces and the cities of Cotabato and Basilan to enhance the campaign against this illegal practice.

Vote-buying is strictly prohibited under Section 261 (a) and (b) of the Omnibus Election Code, which stipulates penalties including imprisonment, disqualification from public office, and loss of voting rights for those found guilty. The offense involves offering money or anything of value to influence voting behavior.

Garcia issued a stern warning to those considering engaging in vote-buying activities, stating that any evidence or complaints received would prompt immediate action. He further explained that the Comelec holds the authority to withhold a candidate's proclamation if a complaint is lodged, even prior to a final decision.

The Comelec Chairperson also reminded the public of past actions where the poll body had cancelled the registration of political parties and disqualified candidates for violating campaign regulations. He assured that similar measures would be taken if violations are observed in the upcoming elections.

The BARMM Parliamentary Elections are set for September 14.
