Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is hopeful that the PHP3.6 billion budget allocated for the inaugural Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections (BPE) will be sufficient, despite the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Erwin Garcia expressed optimism that the budget, which includes a PHP3 billion allocation and a PHP100 million standby fund from Comelec, along with PHP500 million from the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, will cover the election expenses. He noted that any adjustments based on current global events might still allow the budget to suffice.
Garcia also raised concerns about the potential impact of the Middle East crisis on preparations for the elections, tentatively scheduled for September 14. He highlighted the possible increase in costs for materials such as ballots due to the rising prices of commodities, particularly petroleum.
The Comelec chief pointed out that the costs for paper, ink, and printing services by the National Printing Office might surge. Additionally, logistics expenses, including shipping services, are expected to rise, necessitating adjustments in the budget planning.
The Commission on Elections is currently awaiting the submission of a measure from the Senate and the House of Representatives to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for him to sign it into law, which is a crucial step in the preparation for the polls.
