Colombia’s Osorio Wins Inaugural PH Women’s Open Singles Crown

Manila: Fifth seed Camila Osorio of Colombia achieved a significant victory by defeating fourth seed Donna Vekic of Croatia with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 to claim the singles title at the inaugural WTA 125 Philippine Women's Open. The match took place at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center hardcourt and lasted two hours and 31 minutes. According to Philippines News Agency, Osorio, ranked World No. 84, adapted her strategy to clinch the second set and maintained her focus in the decisive third set. This victory marked Osorio's first appearance in the Philippines, where she expressed her gratitude towards the supportive crowd. At 24, Osorio has an impressive track record, including a singles bronze and mixed doubles silver (with Nicolás Mejía) at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Osorio was presented with the champion's trophy by John Patrick Gregorio, chairperson of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the National Sports Tourism-Inter Agency Committee (NST-IAC). During her journe y to the final, Osorio overcame competitors such as Japanese players Sakura Hosogi and Mai Hontama, Filipino second seed Alex Eala, and Argentinian third seed Solana Sierra. Conversely, Vekic's path to the final included victories over Japanese Kyoka Okamura, Russian Mariia Tkacheva, Chinese Lin Zhu, and Russian Tatiana Prozorova. Vekic, a notable athlete with achievements like the 2024 Paris Olympics silver medal and a Wimbledon semifinal appearance, extended her congratulations to Osorio and wished her future success. Osorio was awarded USD15,500 and 125 Women's Tennis Association (WTA) points for her triumph, whereas Vekic received USD8,400 and 81 points.
