CIDG Summons Coaches, Players Over Death of 2 Ateneo Athletes

Aurora: The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) on Thursday subpoenaed several individuals, including coaches and players, as it investigates the death of college basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili in Aurora province.

According to Philippines News Agency, CIDG chief Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II announced during a press briefing that subpoenas have been issued to several individuals, including the players who were present in Aurora during the incident. These individuals are expected to appear on Monday at the CIDG office in Camp Crame, where investigators aim to interview them to understand their activities and the circumstances surrounding the incident on that day.

Morico highlighted the focus of the investigation on whether the school authorities adequately prepared for the safety and medical needs of the athletes participating in a team-building activity. He indicated that the school authorities were present with the team during the event.

Further, Morico mentioned that the CIDG has requested the Department of Justice to issue an Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order (ILBO) to prevent certain persons of interest, including a foreign national, from leaving the country.

When questioned about the potential non-compliance of those summoned, Morico stated that the CIDG possesses contempt powers through the court. However, he emphasized that the CIDG is asking for cooperation in the interest of justice, as the incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals, one being a foreign national and the other a young athlete.

Morico also revealed the possibility of issuing subpoenas to former Ateneo players who have previously described alleged "hell week" and "military training-like" practices under the Ateneo basketball coaching and training staff.

He reassured the public that the investigation is being conducted with utmost fairness, and the investigators are committed to building a strong case to ensure justice for the families of the deceased players.

The tragic incident involved Baterbonia and Adili, members of the Ateneo de Manila University men's basketball team, who reportedly drowned during a team-building activity at a resort in Dipaculao on Monday. Initial investigations indicate that the two athletes drowned while participating in activities at the resort.
