CIDG Reconstructs Scene of Ateneo Players’ Drowning in Aurora

Manila: The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) on Tuesday conducted a scene reconstruction in connection with the drowning of two Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8. The reconstruction aims to establish the circumstances leading to the deaths of Rene Baterbonia, 18, and Divine Adili, 21.

According to Philippines News Agency, investigators examined sea conditions at the time of the incident, the shoreline's position at high tide, and the locations of players, coaches, and witnesses based on security footage and testimony. The investigation also focused on the victims' distance and depth in the water. CIDG utilized SONAR technology to map the underwater topography and a 3D scanner for accurate spatial data of the shoreline and scene.

CIDG chief Maj. Gen. Robert Alexander Morico II stated that the deployment to the beach resort in Barangay Libis was coordinated with the Dipaculao Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), which had sent rescuers during the incident. Morico assured the public that investigators are meticulously examining every piece of evidence and data to ensure justice for the victims.

The reconstruction further aims to analyze sea conditions, measure tide lines, and determine the victims' locations and water depth. Additionally, a safety audit was conducted to verify the presence of warning signs and required emergency safety measures along the beachfront.

As the investigation progresses, CIDG has summoned former and current Ateneo basketball players and coaching staff members. Former head coach Tab Baldwin appeared before investigators last week. Police are also investigating potential violations of the Anti-Hazing Act related to the incident.
