Manila: At least seven people were injured when a ceiling panel collapsed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 on Good Friday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the operator New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) stated that all seven individuals were in stable condition and received immediate medical attention. A medical team, along with airport security personnel and the PNP Aviation Security Group, responded to the incident, which took place at approximately 10:43 a.m. in the terminal's arrival extension area.
The NNIC reported that the affected area was promptly cordoned off, and their engineering team conducted an inspection of the surrounding section, confirming its safety for normal operations. Assistance was provided to those involved, and the safety and well-being of passengers, airport workers, and visitors remain the operator's top priority.
NNIC also mentioned that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the incident. They are collaborating closely with the relevant authorities and will take necessary actions based on the findings. Transportation Secretary Banoy Lopez has instructed NNIC and the Manila International Airport to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and airport personnel, with a detailed report on the cause of the incident expected.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has also directed both entities to investigate the incident, assuring that operations at NAIA Terminal 1 are continuing as usual. The DOTr is monitoring the situation closely and anticipates a thorough assessment, along with the implementation of necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
