Cebu: The 14-year-old Cebu student who brought an unloaded gun to school intended only to threaten his friend's alleged bullies on school grounds, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, in a press briefing held at Camp Crame, PNP spokesperson Col. Allen Rae Co said the student's intention was to intimidate the alleged bullies, not to carry out a shooting. The student was intercepted at Lut-od National High School in Pinamungajan, Cebu, after a teacher discovered a Smith and Wesson .357 Magnum revolver in his bag during a surprise bag inspection.

Co highlighted the danger of minors gaining access to firearms, noting that the gun was unregistered, making the tracking of the owner difficult. The student initially claimed the gun belonged to his grandfather but later recanted.

Meanwhile, the PNP spokesperson called for responsible media coverage and public sharing of videos involving shooting incidents, amid questions on whether extensive coverage could contribute to copycat incidents. Co emphasized the need for balance in reporting to avoid glorifying such acts.

Additionally, the PNP is reviewing its standard operating procedures following an incident in Camarines Sur where a police officer's hand was severed in a bolo attack. The PNP is considering changes to operational procedures, including the use of additional protective equipment during high-risk responses.

PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has encouraged the public not to share videos of shooting incidents and stressed the importance of proper firearm storage. He also commended Staff Sergeant Noli Mira±a for his courage in a recent incident, emphasizing the need for de-escalation and decisive action when necessary.
