CDO Embraces Unique ‘Kagay-anon’ Chinese New Year Celebration

Cagayan de oro: The city government is on board with the Filipino-Chinese community in celebrating the Chinese New Year here, highlighting a distinct "Kagay-anon" rendition of the festivities.

According to Philippines News Agency, during a program at the City Information Office on Wednesday, John Asuncion, head of the local development and investment promotions, stated that each year, the local government explores different ways to celebrate the Chinese New Year, aiming to attract tourism and investment. He mentioned that the celebrations have evolved from traditional fireworks to a pyro-musical event to bring something new to Cagayan de Oro.

The week-long celebration will commence on February 16, featuring a Food Bazaar as a key highlight. This event will showcase Cagayan de Oro-made delicacies, reflecting the growth and influence of Filipino-Chinese culture in the city.

Efren Uy, chairman of the Cagayan de Oro Filipino-Chinese Community, emphasized that the city has been home to many Filipino-Chinese for more than a century. The community aims to preserve the city's rich history through their contributions, celebrating the unique blend of cultures within Cagayan de Oro.
