Quezon city: The Climate Change Commission (CCC) has urged water utilities and other essential service providers to align their operations and investments with the Philippines' national climate commitments to strengthen climate resilience. In a news release Monday, CCC Vice Chairperson and Executive Director Robert E.A. Borje emphasized the systemic nature of climate risks in the Philippines, calling for coordinated action among the government, private sector, and communities.
According to Philippines News Agency, Borje stated that successful climate action requires more than just policy or infrastructure; it necessitates collective movement from institutions, communities, and individual Filipinos. Speaking at the 1st Manila Water Sustainability Leadership Talk held in Quezon City on Friday, he highlighted the crucial role of water utilities in ensuring water security amidst a changing climate. This includes climate-proofing infrastructure, diversifying water sources, and integrating nature-based solutions for watershed management.
Borje pointed to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) as the key frameworks guiding the country's climate action and sustainable development efforts. He noted that water companies could support mitigation through energy efficiency, low-carbon operations, and improved wastewater treatment, while adaptation could be achieved through resilient, risk-informed infrastructure.
Manila Water President and CEO Roberto Locsin echoed this sentiment, stating that sustainability in water services goes beyond basic delivery. He emphasized that daily operations present opportunities for direct climate action. The Sustainability Leadership Talk serves as Manila Water's platform for engaging leaders from government, academe, and industry on climate action and resilience.
The CCC reaffirmed its commitment under the Paris Agreement to actively engage with the private sector in advancing climate-resilient development and protecting essential services amid climate change.
