Manila: Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. on Thursday said his office will remain focused on implementing reforms despite false reports about his alleged imminent exit.
According to Philippines News Agency, Catapang clarified that the fabricated reports suggesting his imminent replacement as chief of BuCor were 'misinformation prompted by evil forces.' He emphasized that the office's focus remains on their goals and the positive impact they aim to achieve.
Catapang stated the commitment to combating fake news and misinformation is crucial in safeguarding the reputation of BuCor and the integrity of public institutions in general. He highlighted the significant challenges associated with positions of authority, particularly within public institutions.
He expressed concern over the dissemination of fake news, describing it as an alarming trend that undermines institutional integrity and public trust. Catapang urged the public to remain vigilant and discerning, stressing the importance of critical thinking and the need to verify information before accepting it as truth. He encouraged relying on reliable news sources for accurate information.
Before his appointment at BuCor, Catapang served as the 45th Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. He succeeded Gerald Bantag as the head of BuCor, following Bantag's indictment on charges of using inmates as hitmen for targets outside the prison. Bantag remains at large.
