Caraga: The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Caraga Region (DSWD-13) has reaffirmed its support and solidarity with every cancer warrior, survivor, and their families as they face the challenges of the disease. The DSWD-13 echoed its stance in a statement on Tuesday, as the nation observes Cancer Awareness Month.
According to Philippines News Agency, as of September this year, 323 cancer patients have received PHP3.7 million in financial assistance through the agency’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program. ‘Beyond financial aid, the agency also recognizes the emotional and psychological toll that cancer brings through the WiSupport program,’ the DSWD-13 said.
WiSupport is an online mental health and psychosocial support platform that provides open, safe spaces for meaningful conversations that foster hope, strength, and emotional well-being, not only for patients but also for their loved ones who share in their journey. Melody, 38, is a mother of a cancer patient who keeps struggling and praying for her daughter’s recovery from cancer. ‘The battle is real and the pain, as a mother, hit deep in me,’ Melody, who asked to hide her real identity for the sake of her daughter, said in a phone interview on Tuesday.
She is also thankful that the government has provided financial aid and psychosocial support to patients and their family members. ‘We call on everyone to spread awareness, show empathy, and take part in creating a community of care where one fights cancer alone,’ the DSWD-13 said.
