Caraga Schools Receive PHP9.2 Million for Agricultural Projects

Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) 13 in the Caraga Region has allocated PHP9.2 million for agricultural production initiatives at two state colleges in the region. The funding was announced during a ceremonial event where DA-13 Director Ricardo O±ate Jr. handed over the funds for the projects on Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the projects involve the establishment of a PHP4.7 million mushroom production center at Agusan del Sur State University, spearheaded by project leader Raymond Gabica. Additionally, a PHP4.5 million SMART Greenhouse project will be constructed at Caraga State University, with Juven Luzorata leading the initiative.

The DA-13 emphasized the goal of creating sustainable mushroom production in Agusan del Sur, implementing value-adding technologies, and developing strategies for product innovation. These efforts aim to increase the value, extend shelf life, and boost the income of local mushroom growers.

The SMART Greenhouse project is intended to serve as a learning, research, and production facility for university students. It will also benefit farmers across local government units in the province by incorporating modern farming techniques such as drip irrigation and hydroponics.

Funding for these projects comes from the DA's National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program, which aims to enhance local food production, strengthen community resilience, and address the challenges of rising food costs, particularly in urban regions.
