Caraga Provinces Take Precautionary Measures as Typhoon Tino Approaches

Caraga: Provinces in the Caraga Region suspended classes, work, and sea travel Monday amid the threat of Typhoon Tino (international name Kalmaegi). Dinagat Islands, Siargao Island, and Bucas Grande Islands were under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3, while mainland Surigao del Norte and parts of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Sur were under Signal No. 2.

According to Philippines News Agency, local governments issued executive orders Sunday suspending classes at all levels and work in public and private sectors. The Philippine Coast Guard also halted sea travel for all vessels. Governor Nilo Demerey stated that the provincial government has already made preparations to ensure the safety of the residents of Dinagat Islands, with relief goods on standby.

Preemptive evacuations were underway in coastal communities. In Libjo town, 604 families were evacuated, while Cagdianao town moved 222 families to safety. Flooding was reported on the national highway connecting Butuan City to Surigao City in Tubay and Santiago, Agusan del Norte.

Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers of Surigao del Norte called on essential businesses to remain open and placed the provincial disaster council on red alert.
