Antipolo: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Wednesday that the 30-day campaign period for the March 14 special elections in the 2nd District of Antipolo City will begin on Thursday. Aspirants for the vacant seat, previously held by the late Rep. Romeo Acop, will need to adhere to specific prohibitions during this period.
According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia emphasized certain restrictions that candidates must observe, including prohibitions on the distribution of money and the use of oversized campaign posters. However, Garcia noted that campaign materials displayed on private properties would not be regulated by Comelec, provided they have the property owner's consent.
Garcia urged candidates to minimize noise pollution during their campaign activities and avoid causing traffic disruptions. "I also hope that our candidates, what we ask, is that we do not disturb our communities, especially by using loud sound systems or by circling around, which also disturbs traffic," he advised.
Comelec is anticipated to issue the certificates of candidacies for the seven participants on Wednesday. These candidates are Dandin Infante, Reden Llama, Lorenzo Juan Sumulong III, Maria Trinidad Cafirma, Philip Conrad Acop, Nathaniel Lobigas, and Irvin Paulo Tapales. Garcia stated that no petitions have been received to disqualify or cancel any of the seven candidacies, suggesting these are the final contenders.
Garcia also reminded candidates of the importance of respecting the Anti-Discrimination Resolution, which prohibits derogatory attacks against fellow candidates or individuals during the campaign. "Let's all focus on this election.but the candidates should remember that our Anti-Discrimination Resolution is in effect. We are not allowed to attack candidates below the belt, or even other people, just to make fun of or get the attention of the voters," he added.
