Camarines sur: The provincial government of Camarines Sur has been the recipient of PHP2.5 million worth of health items and medicines from the Department of Health (DOH) in Bicol, following the devastation wrought by Super Typhoon Uwan. The package was aimed at providing immediate relief and addressing pressing health concerns in the aftermath of the typhoon.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DOH-Bicol’s report on Monday detailed that the commodities include water purification tablets, breastfeeding kits, insecticide-treated nets, screens for mosquito protection, hygiene kits, and water containers. These items are crucial for ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water and protecting the health of pregnant and lactating women and other vulnerable groups in the affected regions.
Additionally, the DOH-Bicol extended PHP1.7 million worth of commodities and logistical support to residents in Catanduanes, who were also impacted by the typhoon. The public has been advised to remain vigilant about potential diseases that can arise during and after such disasters. Temporary and crowded living conditions, coupled with limited access to clean water and sanitation, can lead to the spread of food and water-borne diseases like cholera, amoebiasis, and typhoid fever.
DOH teams have visited and assessed the most affected areas to evaluate the condition of sanitation facilities and water sources in evacuation centers. Water purification tablets have been distributed to local government units for immediate use, ensuring that safe drinking water is available to the communities in need.
