Bicol: The visit of Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon and Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez to the Bicol region is anticipated to expedite several delayed infrastructure projects. This includes critical developments such as the Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center, the Daraga flyover, and a long-awaited transmission line aimed at facilitating international flights.
According to Philippines News Agency, the discussions between the regional officials and the Cabinet secretaries focused on addressing these pending infrastructure initiatives. The construction of the Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center, which promises 650 additional beds, and the Daraga flyover were highlighted as priority projects. The transmission line project is particularly crucial as it is seen as a step toward enabling international flights, thus potentially boosting the region's connectivity and economy.
Albay Governor Al Francis Bichara expressed optimism that the road widening and construction in Barangay Morera in Guinobatan will be completed before Holy Week, which is expected to see a surge in motorists on the South Road. Additionally, the flooding issue in Barangay Masarawag was discussed, with Dizon assuring an investigation into the causes of the flooding that occurs during heavy rains.
At the Bicol International Airport, Transportation Secretary Lopez committed a PHP200-million to PHP300-million fund for lowering National Grid Corporation of the Philippines transmission lines. This move is expected to enhance tourism and economic opportunities. Talks are already underway with Cebu Pacific regarding potential international flights to Hong Kong or Bangkok.
Moreover, Sorsogon Governor Edwin Hamor expressed gratitude for the secretaries' visit and their evaluation of the Maharlika Highway and upcoming projects for Matnog Port, which serves as a vital link to the Visayas and Mindanao.
