BSKE Postponement to 2027 Poses Challenges, Says Comelec

Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday indicated that organizing the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) in 2027 would present significant challenges.

According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia expressed concerns over the feasibility of holding the elections next year, stating in a Viber message to reporters, "It looks like it will be difficult." He refrained from providing further details.

Garcia previously mentioned that the election body prefers to conduct the BSKE this year to ensure adequate preparation time for the May 2028 National and Local Elections. The BSKE is currently set for November 2, but there have been suggestions to delay it until late next year.

The Comelec has expressed its readiness to engage in congressional discussions if invited. "We will give our full participation during the deliberations of the House of Representatives and Senate versions," Garcia noted.

Senator Imee Marcos has introduced Senate Bill No. 2067, proposing to reschedule the November 2026 BSKE to October 2027, due to concerns over high travel costs potentially impacting voter turnout.
