Zamboanga: The Bureau of Customs (BOC) acknowledged the Naval Command - Western Mindanao (NCWM) for the series of maritime enforcement operations that intercepted approximately PHP193 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes in less than a month.

According to Philippines News Agency, BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno highlighted the NCWM's sustained vigilance and operational excellence in several operations that delivered a significant blow to illicit trade activities in the region. He reported that on August 14, personnel of Naval Task Force 61 intercepted a vessel off Buton Mahablo in Parang, Sulu, carrying approximately PHP170.14 million worth of undocumented foreign-brand cigarettes. Five crew members and 19 laborers were apprehended, and the vessel and its cargo were subsequently turned over to the BOC - Port of Zamboanga for appropriate legal action.

An earlier interdiction conducted by the NCWM off Simisa Island, Sulu on July 29 resulted in the seizure of approximately PHP23 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes. Commissioner Nepomuceno emphasized the significant contribution of the Naval Command - Western Mindanao to the campaign against smuggling. He expressed gratitude for their swift action in preventing the entry of illegal products that undermine legitimate trade and community security.

The Customs chief also recognized the NCWM and its personnel for their enforcement efforts, citing the importance of sustained inter-agency coordination in strengthening border protection and combating illicit trade. He reiterated BOC's commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Naval Command - Western Mindanao through sustained coordination and joint enforcement efforts aimed at combating smuggling and other forms of illicit trade.
