Biliran Advances Bamboo Rehabilitation Program to Mitigate Flooding

Biliran: The provincial government of Biliran is intensifying its Bamboo Rehabilitation Program to address flooding problems in the province while offering a new livelihood source for residents. At least 100 Bayog bamboo seedlings were planted along riverbanks in Barangay Agpangi and Barangay Sabang in the town of Naval.

According to Philippines News Agency, Governor Rogelio Espina led the activity with provincial government employees to strengthen the province’s natural defenses against flooding and erosion. The Bayog bamboo variety was chosen for the reforestation initiative because of its critical role in protecting communities. It is also versatile, suitable for construction, furniture-making, and as a food source.

The Biliran provincial government stated Thursday that the newly planted seedlings are expected to stabilize riverbanks, prevent soil erosion, and reduce scouring around bridges and other critical infrastructure. Bamboo acts as a carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, while slowing water flow during heavy rains, thus reducing flood risks.

Through this initiative, the provincial government aims to promote greater community participation in environmental stewardship. Governor Espina emphasized the long-term benefits of the bamboo-planting activity, describing the seedlings as ‘guardians of our riverbanks and foundations of our green economy.’

He reiterated the province’s dedication to expanding bamboo planting across all major river systems in Biliran. In addition to the 100 seedlings already planted, the provincial government is currently propagating another 3,000 bamboo seedlings, which will be transplanted throughout the province.
