Iloilo city: The Batang Kusinero summer camp, spearheaded by the Technical Institute of Iloilo City (TIIC), has successfully kindled a culinary passion among young Ilonggos, with 189 'young chefs' completing their training on Tuesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, TIIC administrator Matty Tre±as highlighted that the participating children were taught to prepare both local and international cuisine as part of the city government's initiative to advance gastronomy education, life skills, and creativity. "As Iloilo City continues to uphold its distinction as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, initiatives like Batang Kusinero strengthen the city's commitment to shaping future culinary talents and preserving its rich food culture," Tre±as remarked during the closing ceremony.
Tre±as further emphasized that food transcends mere sustenance, embodying culture, heritage, and an expression of love. "Today, these young kids are stepping up to carry that proud Ilonggo culinary tradition forward," she added. The program reflects TIIC's dedication to fostering practical skills that empower the community, extending these opportunities to the youth.
The summer camp was a month-long event organized into eight batches in collaboration with Iloilo City Gastronomy. Participants were educated in essential kitchen safety and basic cooking skills, baking and dessert decorating, plating and food presentation, as well as preparing simple Filipino and foreign dishes suited for children.
