Government officials in Basilan province have strongly condemned the grenade-throwing incident that injured a laborer near the newly-constructed outlet of a known food chain on Tuesday evening in Lamitan City.
According to Philippines News Agency, Basilan Gov. Mujiv Hataman expressed strong disapproval of the incident in a statement, emphasizing that such violence has no place in their community as they strive for peace in the province. The injured laborer was identified by police as Rebel Masulog, 22, from Cabaluran, Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur.
Jemar Rivera, a security guard, reported being stunned by the explosion near his post at the newly constructed building. Rivera informed the police that he did not see the suspect responsible for throwing the explosive.
The Jollibee outlet, which is set to open on March 7, also sustained damage from the explosion, including broken windows and holes in the concrete wall caused by shrapnel. Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Furigay expressed concern for the safety and well-being of residents and visitors, urging the community to remain calm yet vigilant.
Lt. Col. Elmer Solon, Lamitan City police chief, stated that the investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest the suspect. Gov. Hataman mentioned that a reward will be offered to anyone providing information leading to the arrest of those responsible, though he did not specify the amount.
The Jollibee branch will be the first in Lamitan City, marking a significant development for the area.
