Baguio Police Initiates Information Campaign to Reduce Road Accidents

Baguio: The Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) is taking steps to address the rising number of vehicular incidents in the city by launching an information education campaign in collaboration with various organizations, cooperatives, and motor vehicle groups.

According to Philippines News Agency, BCPO Director Col. Ruel Tagel emphasized the need to focus on law enforcement and education to combat the increase in traffic accidents this year. In an interview, he highlighted plans to establish a memorandum of agreement with motorcycle groups, public utility vehicle groups, and motor vehicle clubs to enhance road safety.

The BCPO is also intensifying the enforcement of traffic rules and regulations, particularly the removal of road obstructions that contribute to accidents. Data indicates that the first quarter of 2025 saw 316 vehicular traffic accidents, marking a 24 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, which recorded 253 cases.

Reckless imprudence leading to property damage, homicide, and physical injuries are the most common incidents. Motor vehicles were involved in 246 of these cases, while motorcycles accounted for 70 incidents. Human error, mechanical defects, and road conditions are identified as primary causes of these accidents.

Col. Tagel stressed the importance of collaboration with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to address these issues effectively. He advocates for a comprehensive approach, involving various stakeholders, to tackle road safety challenges.

In addition to the educational campaign, the BCPO has developed the BCPOView Baguio application to provide public navigation information, further aiding efforts to reduce road mishaps in Baguio City.
