Baguio Police Advocate for Stricter Penalties and Regulations on Firecracker Use

Baguio: Local police are pushing for stricter penalties against individuals who use firecrackers, despite the city's continued strict enforcement of its firecracker ban.

According to Philippines News Agency, Col. Ruel Tagel emphasized the need for sustained strict implementation and community education to reduce firecracker-related injuries. Speaking on the sidelines of the destruction of firecrackers, pyrotechnics, and 'boga' at the Melvin Jones football field in Burnham Park, he highlighted the importance of parental responsibility and awareness about the hazards of firecrackers.

Ordinance 53-2009 outlines penalties for users and sellers of firecrackers, including fines and potential imprisonment for repeat offenses. Community fireworks displays are permitted with a city-issued permit. Police plan to visit schools and engage with children, encouraging creative activities as alternatives to firecracker use.

Materials such as plastic soda bottles and tin cans are often used to construct 'boga,' an improvised cannon confiscated mostly from children aged 8 to 15. More community engagements are planned to educate residents about the ordinance and promote safety.

The city reported a decrease in fireworks-related injuries during the recent holiday season, attributed to Mayor Benjamin Magalong's directive holding barangay officials and police chiefs accountable for injuries in their areas. Col. Julio Lizardo praised the effective implementation of the ban, noting no major incidents in the region, and commended Mountain Province for achieving zero injuries through strong local collaboration.
