Bacolod Solon Urges DOJ to Protect Witnesses in Flood Control Anomalies

Bacolod city: Bacolod City Representative Alfredo Abelardo Benitez has urged the Department of Justice (DOJ) to provide protection for witnesses willing to participate in the investigation into alleged anomalies in flood control projects across the nation. Benitez emphasized the importance of the DOJ’s role in safeguarding these individuals, who may have critical information regarding these projects.

According to Philippines News Agency, Benitez expressed the need for the DOJ to actively seek out and protect individuals under the whistleblower program, particularly those who can offer insights into the purported corruption within the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and other related entities. He underscored that waiting for witnesses to come forward could hinder the process of prosecuting those accused of misusing public funds intended for flood mitigation.

Benitez highlighted the government’s duty to create a secure environment for these witnesses to reveal the truth. He noted that achieving justice for the misuse of public resources is essential for bringing about positive change in the country. The lawmaker also announced plans to lead a flood control summit, aiming to address the persistent flooding issues in Bacolod City. The summit’s agenda will include identifying urgent concerns and developing effective solutions through collaboration with local and national government agencies.

In a recent preparatory meeting, Benitez engaged with officials from Bacolod and neighboring Bago, as well as representatives from pertinent national agencies, to set the groundwork for the upcoming summit. He emphasized the importance of collective action in tackling the challenges posed by flooding, aiming to protect communities more effectively.
