Manila: The Philippine Army (PA) is set to advance its drone capabilities as part of its mission to secure the nation, according to its spokesperson. On Friday, Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala shared insights into the PA's future plans, emphasizing the importance of developing drone capability, doctrine, and training.
According to Philippines News Agency, Col. Dema-ala explained that these enhancements would enable the Army to conduct reconnaissance and combat operations more effectively. While "recon" refers to reconnaissance or surveillance, the term "armed" is used to describe drones equipped to attack military targets. However, due to security reasons, Dema-ala refrained from disclosing specific details regarding the new capabilities.
Without specifying the exact type of platforms currently in their inventory, Dema-ala noted that the Army's existing drones are limited to reconnaissance capabilities. He emphasized that acquiring more advanced drone technologies is a crucial component of the PA's ongoing modernization efforts aimed at adapting to contemporary challenges.
The Army's modernization plan is designed to ensure responsiveness to new threats and to enhance cross-domain capabilities. Dema-ala highlighted that the military use of drones has gained attention following their effective deployment by both sides in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
