Cagayan de oro: The Philippine Army's 4th Infantry Division (4ID) is set to undergo a leadership transition on April 29 as Maj. Gen. Michele Anayron Jr. approaches the mandatory retirement age of 57. This significant event will mark the culmination of Anayron's years of dedicated service and leadership in the Northern Mindanao (Region 10) and Caraga Regions.
According to Philippines News Agency, the 4ID spokesperson, Lt. Col. Patrick Martinez, highlighted that the change of command ceremony will be an opportunity to reflect on Anayron's impact in the regions he served. Under his leadership, the military made substantial progress in weakening insurgency activities, notably reducing the New People's Army (NPA) presence to an estimated 40 members, with 18 in Northern Mindanao and 22 in Caraga.
Anayron, whose familial roots are in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental, comes from a lineage of public service. His father was a lawyer and served as an ex-officio board member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Misamis Oriental. This background in public service is reflected in Anayron's approach to military leadership.
One of the key achievements under Anayron's command was a recent successful operation in Surigao del Sur, where the 4ID neutralized two NPA members and seized firearms, prompting the remaining rebels to withdraw. This operation was aided by crucial intelligence from local residents, who had reportedly been subjected to threats and extortion by the NPA.
As the Philippine Army prepares for this transition, the identity of Anayron's successor remains unannounced. The change of command ceremony promises to be a significant event, acknowledging the accomplishments of Anayron's tenure and setting the stage for continued efforts in maintaining peace and security in the regions.
