Antique: The Antique Provincial Police Office (APPO) is aiming for zero injuries related to firecrackers during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. Col. Lea Rose Pe±a, the director of APPO, emphasized the importance of public safety during the holidays in an interview on Wednesday. She urged individuals to be responsible and avoid lighting firecrackers that could potentially cause harm.
According to Philippines News Agency, Pe±a highlighted the specific dangers posed by ‘boga’ or improvised cannons within the community. Records from the Antique Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) show that between December 24, 2024, and January 1, 2025, there were 11 injuries attributed to ‘boga.’ Additionally, two other injuries were reported due to a whistle bomb and “kwitis” (skyrocket).
Pe±a stated that police efforts will focus on ensuring that firecrackers are only lit in designated common areas across municipalities to reduce risks to bystanders. She encouraged the public to aim for a safe and injury-free Christmas celebration.
Furthermore, Pe±a issued a warning to the Antique police regarding indiscriminate firing, noting that violators will face prompt action. Philippine National Police Acting Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has previously announced a one-strike policy, making police personnel administratively and criminally accountable for any incidents of indiscriminate firing during the holiday season.
