Animal-Assisted Therapy Program Launched to Support Abuse Survivors in Davao

Davao city: The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Davao Region (DSWD-11) has expanded its services through the launch of the Angel Pets Program, which harnesses the healing power of animals to support survivors of abuse, neglect, and exploitation, officials announced Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Angel Pets initiative is an expanded social technology program in partnership with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). It uses animal-assisted therapy (AAT) to help vulnerable individuals recover emotionally. The program, which began in Metro Manila, officially rolled out to Cebu and Davao in March 2026.

"It uses trained dogs called 'doctor dogs' to help disadvantaged individuals or vulnerable persons heal emotionally," stated Anne Jickain, officer-in-charge of DSWD-11's Innovations Division, during a press briefing. The "doctor dogs" will visit residents in DSWD-managed centers. These animals provide a non-judgmental, calming presence that encourages openness during the healing process, particularly for survivors, especially children and women coping with trauma.

"The purpose is to improve the mental health and emotional well-being of vulnerable individuals, and to reduce the stress and anxiety they experience," Jickain added. The "doctor dogs" are not ordinary pets but volunteer animals that undergo strict temperament testing to ensure they are calm, obedient, and friendly enough for therapeutic work.

A major recruitment and screening event for local "doctor dogs" in Davao is scheduled on May 27 at the DSWD-11 office. Both handlers and their dogs must meet specific qualifications and certifications to participate in therapeutic work.

Jickain further mentioned that the project aims to bridge the generational gap between senior citizens and children aged 4 to 5, fostering mutual emotional support and cultural preservation. For senior citizens, the program promotes "active aging" and mental well-being by making them feel valued, productive, and integrated into the community. For children, it instills traditional Filipino values, respect for elders, and a deeper understanding of Filipino culture at an early age.
