‘Andas’ for Jesus Nazareno Modified to Protect Religious Image

Manila: Organizers of the annual feast of Jesus Nazareno have modified the andas (carriage) that will be used for the Traslacion, the grand procession of the religious image from Quirino Grandstand in Luneta to the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno in Quiapo on Jan. 9. Alex Irasga, Nazareno 2026 adviser, said the modifications include more wheels for the andas, an extra set of ropes, and changes to the image's cross.

According to Philippines News Agency, several changes have been made to the carriage's design to discourage devotees from climbing it. "We have shortened the cross so that there would be fewer opportunities to hang onto it. Our goal here is to protect our image," Irasga explained. He likened the andas to an "owner-type jeepney," noting that it has an under chassis and brakes, with the only missing component being the engine.

The image's glass enclosure is now designed with multiple holes to resolve moisture issues. "The holes will help balance the temperature inside and outside," Irasga noted. Additionally, an extra set of 30-meter ropes has been prepared to address the frequent problem of ropes being cut during the procession.

Irasga also detailed the road closures and procession route, stating that Katigbak Drive fronting the Manila Hotel and Padre Burgos Street will be closed to devotees to ensure a smoother passage for the andas. The annual Traslacion will commence following the dawn prayer at the Quirino Grandstand, and the route involves several key streets leading to Quiapo Church.

Meanwhile, Quiapo Church Rector Fr. Ramon Jade Licuanan has urged devotees to attend any of the 33 Fiesta Masses that began on Thursday and will continue until Jan. 9. "The Mass is the highest form of worship," he emphasized, noting its spiritual significance compared to the physical act of joining the procession.

In addition, Balanga Bishop Rufino Sescon is scheduled to preside over the Misa Mayor (midnight Mass) at the Quirino Grandstand on Friday, followed by a vigil leading up to the grand procession.
