All Systems Go for ASEAN Summit as Media Hub Opens in Cebu

Cebu: The Philippines is all set to host the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Meetings in Cebu from May 6 to 8, the ASEAN National Organizing Council (NOC) announced Tuesday during the opening of the International Media Center (IMC). The IMC will serve as the central hub for local and foreign media covering the high-level ASEAN meetings across various parts of Cebu.

According to Philippines News Agency, ASEAN NOC Director-General Ma. Hellen De La Vega stated that the summit proper will commence on May 8, following a series of ASEAN senior officials meetings scheduled from May 6 to 7. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., along with leaders from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, and Malaysia, will convene for the Special Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit in Cebu on May 7.

In a press conference held at the IMC located at Mactan World Museum, De La Vega assured that the Philippines is prepared for any contingency ahead of a forecasted tropical cyclone expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility on May 9 or 10. She also mentioned that austerity measures have been implemented to ensure a practical hosting of the ASEAN summit. The Philippines anticipates fruitful discussions among the attending leaders, focusing on crucial issues such as energy, economic, and food security.

De La Vega emphasized the importance of balancing high standards expected of the ASEAN Chairship with the responsible and sustainable use of national and natural resources. Presidential Communications Office Acting Secretary Dave Gomez pledged full support for timely reporting and seamless coverage of the event.

Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Cynthia Chan were also present at the IMC opening. The media center is expecting an estimated 800 to 1,000 local and international journalists.
