Lanao del sur: Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong, serving as the House prosecution panel spokesperson, has raised concerns about the spread of fake news and disinformation surrounding the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. He cautioned that these misleading narratives are creating a 'parallel universe' that could undermine the constitutional process even before the trial has commenced.
According to Philippines News Agency, Adiong highlighted during a televised interview that certain groups are attempting to distort facts, which could weaken public accountability and erode trust in democratic institutions. As the Senate impeachment court readies itself for the proceedings against the country's second-highest official, Adiong emphasized the potential damage of false narratives that are not based on truth and facts.
He warned that the House prosecution panel, consisting of 11 members, anticipates efforts to cast doubt on the impeachment process once the trial formally begins. Some societal sections might oppose the evidence and present a parallel reality, which could challenge the prosecution team's presentation and the overall impeachment process's integrity.
To combat these challenges, Adiong urged the public to verify information circulating online and to follow the impeachment proceedings directly rather than relying on distorted narratives. Despite the anticipated political noise, he assured that the House prosecutors would focus solely on facts and evidence, aiming to present the case as clearly and simply as possible for the understanding of ordinary Filipinos.
In a related development, Adiong revealed that many private lawyers have offered their services to the House prosecution team for free. Some private prosecutors have already joined the team, though discussions on the final composition are ongoing. The prosecution team is carefully evaluating applicants to determine the number of private prosecutors to be included.
The prosecution panel continues its preparations for the trial, which includes mock proceedings and strategy sessions. These efforts aim to ensure that evidence is presented clearly and effectively before both the senator-judges and the Filipino public.
Vice President Duterte is facing serious allegations, which include the misuse of PHP612.5 million in confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery and corruption involving Department of Education officials, and making threats against President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.
