Manila: House trial spokesperson and Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong on Thursday asserted that the House prosecution panel's confidence in securing the conviction of Vice President Sara Duterte is supported by the strength of its evidence rather than the legal troubles of senators associated with her.
According to Philippines News Agency, Adiong, in a media interview, was asked about the prosecution panel's confidence given that some senators perceived to be allies of Duterte, including Sen. Ronald 'Bato' dela Rosa and Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, are facing separate legal issues unrelated to the impeachment case. Adiong affirmed their confidence in the evidence collected and ready for presentation to the impeachment court.
Adiong emphasized that the cases involving individual senators are not connected to the impeachment proceedings. He mentioned that these legal battles are unrelated and beyond their control, noting that some senators facing these issues happen to be associated with the Vice President.
The House spokesperson clarified that neither the prosecution panel nor supporters of the impeachment trial are involved in the unrelated cases facing these senators. He stressed that these situations are not orchestrated by any government agency or individual supporting the impeachment trial.
Adiong reiterated the prosecution's focus on accountability and adherence to the Constitution. He emphasized the importance of standing with the Constitution and ensuring accountability for public officials, while also expressing no ill will towards members of the co-equal branch.
He highlighted that public officials are bound by their oath to uphold the Constitution and must address allegations through lawful processes. Adiong affirmed their commitment to face any charges lawfully presented before them.
Adiong concluded by stating that the rule of law must be respected regardless of one's position on the impeachment case. The House prosecution team is preparing to present its case before the Senate impeachment court, where Duterte will face trial over allegations including misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, and threats to the country's top officials.
