Manila: Adamson University and University of the Philippines downed separate rivals on Tuesday to share the lead in the UAAP Season 88 softball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Malate, Manila. Mae Langga delivered her second home run of the season in leading Adamson University to a 25-0 rout of Ateneo de Manila University, while UP demolished De La Salle University, 4-0.
According to Philippines News Agency, Langga, who played a crucial role in the Lady Falcons' Game 2 victory over the Fighting Maroons last season, sealed the win by sending Gabrielli Profeta's pitch over the left-center fence. Adamson's long-time head coach, Ana Santiago, highlighted the importance of their hitting performance, noting that Langga's home run and the team's timely hits were significant. Santiago emphasized the need for this momentum in their two remaining games of the first round, acknowledging the increasing strength of their opponents.
Langga contributed three hits and four RBIs, while Reyae Villamin added four hits and three RBIs. Glory Alonzo was effective on the mound, allowing just a walk and striking out two Ateneo batters, with April Minanga contributing a strikeout and two easy infield putouts. Santiago expressed her hopes for the team to maintain its momentum against UP on Saturday at 9 a.m.
She anticipated a challenging game against strong opponents like UP and La Salle, advising her team to maintain composure and have presence of mind. Santiago stressed the importance of confidence and the need for new players to respond well to the competitive environment, given their past three years of championship contention.
UST and La Salle hold similar 1-1 records, while Ateneo remains winless after three games.
