Manila: A total of 8,888 tricycle drivers from six cities in the Caraga Region received PHP44,440,000 in cash relief assistance during one-day simultaneous payout activities conducted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-13) on Wednesday. The cash aid aims to provide relief to members of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers' Associations (TODA) amid the continuing increase in fuel prices.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DSWD-13 reported on Thursday that 1,591 drivers in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte, received PHP7,955,000. Meanwhile, 1,640 drivers in Butuan City were allocated PHP8,200,000, and 762 drivers in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur, received PHP3,810,000.
The report also highlighted that 1,804 drivers in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, received PHP9,020,000. In Bislig City, 1,846 drivers were given PHP9,230,000, and in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, 1,245 drivers received PHP6,225,000.
Jenely Cubelo, a tricycle driver from Surigao City, expressed gratitude for the government's timely assistance. Cubelo noted the increasing fuel prices, stating that PHP150 worth of fuel, which previously lasted three hours, now only lasts for two.
Angelito Bucio, a 68-year-old driver from Butuan City, echoed these sentiments. Bucio emphasized the need to allocate the received assistance for fuel and the renewal of his motorcycle registration, expressing gratitude for the government's aid through the DSWD.
The DSWD-13 emphasized the swift implementation of the program to alleviate the burdens of rising fuel prices on the transport sector. The agency also acknowledged the support of local government units, with Regional Director Mari-Flor Dollage recognizing their role in the program's success.
