48 Arrested as NBI Dismantles Scam Hub in Para±aque

Para±aque: The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) announced on Monday that its Special Action Unit operatives arrested 48 individuals during a raid on an online scam hub in Para±aque City on April 17.

According to Philippines News Agency, the arrested individuals were involved in illegal online scams, specifically 'Love Scamming Activities,' 'Pig Butchering,' and 'Cryptocurrency Investment Fraud.' The raid was executed under a warrant to search, seize, and examine computer data (WSSECD) for units in a condominium in Para±aque City.

The NBI reported that among the arrested were 41 Filipinas and seven foreign nationals, who are now facing inquest proceedings for violations of Section 4(b)(2) (Computer-Related Fraud) of Republic Act 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012) and RA 12010 (Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act).

The operational setup discovered by the NBI included multiple computer workstations, laptops, mobile phones, internet routers, and other digital devices, organized in a call center-like configuration. The computer units contained pre-written scripts stored in digital files, which provided step-by-step conversational guides for engaging potential victims.

The subjects created fake profiles to pose as individuals seeking romantic relationships, manipulating victims into sending money through concocted scenarios such as financial emergencies, investment opportunities, or urgent personal needs. Victims were instructed to transfer funds via various cryptocurrency wallets.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag warned those involved in this illegal activity that the NBI is committed to pursuing and prosecuting them to ensure justice is served. He emphasized the NBI's ongoing dedication to protecting the public from online predators and cyber-criminals, reinforcing their commitment to cybercrime prevention and safeguarding citizens in the digital realm.

Matibag also praised the SAU operatives for their success in dismantling the sophisticated online scamming network.
