Manila: Three leaders and two members of the New People's Army (NPA) have been killed in a clash with government troops in Camarines Sur on Tuesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Army's 9th Infantry Division spokesperson Maj. Frank Roldan reported that troops from the 83rd Infantry Battalion and the Philippine National Police encountered the group in a mountainous area of Barangay Burabod, Lagonoy.
Roldan stated that the casualties included individuals with aliases Bal, Paeng, and Ter/Dado, who were leaders within the NPA's organizational structure, along with members known as Cris and Pepe. The operation led to the recovery of several items, including an M16 rifle, a caliber .45 pistol, three anti-personnel mines, a laptop, and personal belongings.
The incident occurred amid intensified pursuit operations following the discovery of four M16 rifles in Barangay Pinamihagan, Lagonoy on December 20. Roldan noted that the group was attempting to regain control in previously held areas to secure local support, but vigilant residents had reported their presence to authorities.
Maj. Gen. Aldwine Almase, 9ID Commander, expressed gratitude towards the community for its role in maintaining peace and security and urged the remaining members of the group to surrender.
