28 Benguet Sitio Electrification Projects to be Completed Within the Year

Baguio city: The Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) has announced that a total of 28 sitio electrification projects across the province are slated for completion this year. These projects are part of an ongoing effort to extend electricity access to remote areas.

According to Philippines News Agency, Engr. Melchor Licoben revealed that these projects, valued at PHP99.8 million, are set to benefit 656 households. The funding for this initiative has been sourced from the National Electrification Administration (NEA). Beneco's operational jurisdiction encompasses Baguio City and the entire Benguet province, underscoring the cooperative's commitment to enhancing infrastructure within its service area.

In alignment with the government's objective to finalize the sitio electrification and barangay line enhancement program by 2028, Beneco has also submitted a request for PHP335 million in additional funds. This request is aimed at completing all designated projects under the program. The sitio electrification initiative is a government-backed project focused on delivering electricity to the most isolated residences, irrespective of the financial return on investment.

Licoben emphasized that the project is being executed even in areas with minimal households, acknowledging that the capital costs may not be recovered for several years. Despite these challenges, the initiative remains a priority to ensure equitable access to electricity.

During the recent 45th Annual General Membership Assembly (AGMA) in Baguio City, Licoben also highlighted Beneco's success in reducing its systems loss rate to 8.63 percent by 2025, significantly below the allowable threshold of 10.25 percent. This reduction translates to lower electricity charges for consumers, providing direct financial benefits to all electricity users in the area. Additionally, he mentioned that Beneco is actively implementing strategies to further reduce power costs for its consumers.
