Laoag city: Police in Ilocos Norte destroyed 257 pieces of boga (improvised cannons) and assorted illegal firecrackers during a ceremonial disposal at Camp Valentin S. Juan in Laoag City on Wednesday. The number of confiscated items was lower than last year's 331 pieces, with production costs estimated at PHP30,000.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ilocos Norte Police Director, Col. Joemar Labiano, expressed gratitude towards partner agencies and the community for their cooperation. He stated that their efforts contributed to a generally peaceful Yuletide celebration, without any firecracker-related fires or incidents of indiscriminate firing.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Rickson Balalio reported 30 firecracker-related injuries from December 21 to January 5, all classified as minor burns. This figure marked a slight decrease compared to the same period last year.
Provincial Fire Marshal Roxanne Annie Parado of the BFP highlighted that Ilocos Norte maintained its record of zero fire incidents caused by firecrackers this year. In 2023, the BFP recorded one firecracker-related fire in Badoc town that resulted in damage to a grocery store.
