Maguindanao del sur: Twenty-three Moro extremists involved in violent extremism in Maguindanao del Sur have surrendered to the government. These individuals, affiliated with Dawlah Islamiya (DI) splinter groups operating in Datu Salibo, Mamasapano, Midsayap, Shariff Aguak, Shariff Saydona Mustapha, Datu Hoffer, and Ampatuan, chose to abandon their armed struggle and reintegrate into society.
According to Philippines News Agency, the surrender was facilitated by Lt. Col. Al Victor Burkley, commander of the Army’s 6th Infantry Battalion (6IB), who presented the individuals to Brig. Gen. Edgar Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, at the 6IB headquarters in Barangay Buayan. The surrender included the relinquishment of 23 assorted war materials, such as grenade launchers and 60mm mortars.
As part of their reintegration process, the surrenderers will receive assistance, including two agriculture tractors, sprayers, 42 sacks of rice from local officials, and cash support. One of the former fighters, identified as ‘Kareem,’ expressed remorse for joining the extremist group, emphasizing the importance of living peacefully with their families over engaging in a futile conflict.
Brig. Gen. Catu praised the decision of these individuals to lay down their arms, highlighting the positive impact on their families and future generations. He emphasized that their choice not only ensures their safety but also protects their children from the repercussions of violent extremism.
Meanwhile, over the weekend, the Army’s 34th Infantry Battalion reported the surrender of additional war materials from civilians in the Bangsamoro Region Special Geographic Area in North Cotabato province, which included .50-caliber sniper rifles, mortar tubes, and assault rifles.
