222 Filipinos in Myanmar Scam Hubs Seek Government Aid and Rescue

Yangon: Filipino nationals are among the more than 1,000 foreign nationals fleeing from Myanmar following a raid on a major online scam hub in Myawaddy near the Thailand border, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed Sunday morning. The Philippine Embassy in Yangon has so far received a total of 222 active requests for rescue and repatriation assistance from Filipino nationals.

According to Philippines News Agency, of this number, 66 individuals were reported to have crossed into Thailand, while nine managed to travel to Yangon and are now under the custody of the embassy. The DFA said the embassy is working with Myanmar authorities to finalize the deportation procedures for those currently in holding camps and to facilitate the rescue of those who remain in scam hub compounds.

Local reports stated that over 1,000 foreigners fled the KK Park, a notorious scam center in Myawaddy, last week. The agency said it had been closely monitoring the situation following confirmed reports of operations conducted by law enforcement authorities on Oct. 20.

The DFA, in coordination with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and other relevant agencies, remains committed to the safe repatriation of affected Filipinos through established Government-to-Government (G2G) channels and continues to work with both Myanmar and Thai authorities to expedite the process.
