Cebu, Metro Cebu remain ‘low risk’ for Covid-19

NPA groups yield to authorities in Caraga

Ten communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels surrendered to the Army and police in the Caraga Region over the past three days, authorities said Wednesday.   The Army’s 26th Infantry Battalion (IB), said six remaining members of Platoon Banglas, Sub-Regional Committee (SRC) 3, North Central Mindanao Regional Committee (NCMRC) of the NPA operating in Agusan del Sur surrendered to its unit on Sept. 25.   “The surrender came after the commanding officer of Platoon Banglas, identified as Badong Lipanda, yielded ahead to this unit on Sept. 17,” the 26IB said in a statement.   The surrenderers also handed over three

Travelers reminded anew to drive safely in Benguet

Travelers going to and from Baguio City are urged anew to exercise caution while driving and ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before traveling.   Capt. Jeremias Toyokan, town chief of police, in an interview on Tuesday afternoon, said from January to Sept. 15 this year, 34 out of 54 incidents that occurred at the portion of Marcos Highway which is under Tuba’s jurisdiction are vehicular traffic incidents.   Many of these accidents are primarily due to mechanical error while some are due to overloading, speeding, and human error such as drivers who overtake without caution, Toyokan added.

Baltic Pipe gas pipeline opens to reduce dependency on Russia

The Baltic Pipe natural gas pipeline was officially opened Tuesday at a ceremony in Szczecin, Poland.   Polish, Norwegian and Danish leaders attended the ceremony for the launch of the gas transmission system, which they hope will end Poland and Europe’s dependency on Russian gas.   Norwegian Minister of Petroleum and Energy Terje Aasland said it was “an important step on the important road to Europe’s independence from Russian energy,” the government stated.   He went further, praising Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki for starting the project years ago, “long before most people realized the importance of European energy independence.”

DOE awards P271-B renewable energy contracts

The Department of Energy (DOE) reported it awarded a total of 998 renewable energy (RE) contracts as of June 2022, with investments amounting to PHP270.8 billion.       In a statement Wednesday, DOE said the RE contracts have a total installed capacity of 5,460.59 megawatts and a potential capacity of 61,613.81 MW.       The biggest investments were in solar energy, which amounted to PHP130.44 billion. This is followed by wind RE technology at PHP52.91 billion, hydropower at PHP38.73 billion, biomass at PHP38.16 billion, and investments in geothermal energy at PHP10.54 billion.       To attract more
