Farmers in typhoon-hit Leyte islet revive seaweed industry

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has distributed 17,629 seaweed seedlings to farmers in Dawahon Islet in Bato, Leyte to revive the industry within the year after it was wrecked by Typhoon Odette in late 2021.   BFAR 8 (Eastern Visayas) seaweed development program focal person Vicenta Promijo said in a phone interview Tuesday that the seedlings, to be planted on a 3,453-square meter farm, are just an initial intervention for the coastal community.   “Our goal is to fully re-establish seaweed farming in the islet within the year. PS-DBM asks Congress: Allow Marcos admin to reform agency

Firemen stave off Maguindanao gas station fire

Alert firefighters have prevented a huge disaster when they put out a blaze that hit a gasoline station in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, Monday evening.   Fire Inspector Ronald Ampang, Sultan Kudarat town fire marshal, said the conflagration started at around 7 p.m. at a building next to the pumping machines of a Phoenix gas station.   “Our initial investigation showed the fire could have been triggered by electrical issues,” Ampang said in a radio interview Tuesday.   He placed the initial cost of damage at around PHP100,000.   No damage were reported on the petroleum products, he added.   Ampang

NoCot cops arrest suspect in twin murder

Police arrested Tuesday a man who allegedly hacked to death his father-in-law and his godfather for still unknown reasons in the North Cotabato town of Alamada.   Major Bryan Espinoza, Alamada town police chief, identified the suspect as Richel Nikor, who hacked his victims with a machete on Monday afternoon after accusing them of practicing “witchcraft.”   The victims are identified as Rolando Salcedo, 56, and Felix Arigola, 70, both of Barangay Barangiran, Alamada.   Nikor is Salcedo’s son-in-law, while Arigola stood as godfather during the suspect’s wedding several years ago.   Initial police reports indicated that Salcedo and the
