Makati city: The 2016 Arbitral Award serves as a significant example of resolving international maritime disputes through legal means, according to the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS). Eduardo Oban Jr., the chairperson of NTF-WPS and National Security Adviser, highlighted its importance during the 3rd Balangay Forum in Makati City, held in conjunction with Maritime Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo).

According to Philippines News Agency, the tribunal, formed under Annex VII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), rendered a unanimous decision favoring the Philippines in the 2013 case against China's 'Nine-Dash Line' claim over most of the South China Sea. The award invalidated Beijing's claims based on 'historic rights,' asserting that they lack a legal foundation under international law.

The tribunal's decision clarified that several contested maritime features do not entitle extensive maritime zones and confirmed that China breached the Philippines' sovereign rights by obstructing fishing, petroleum exploration, and other lawful activities within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone.

Oban emphasized the Philippines' dedication to UNCLOS, which provides the legal framework governing maritime rights, responsibilities, and peaceful conduct at sea. He stated, "Our position continues to be guided by law and by our commitment to a rules-based international order."

"We remain committed to diplomacy, dialogue, and constructive engagement wherever cooperation is possible. At the same time, we will continue to exercise our sovereign rights and fulfill our responsibilities under international law with consistency and confidence," Oban added, underscoring the nation's resolve to uphold international law while pursuing diplomatic solutions.
