1K Mayon-Affected Farmers Receive Rice Aid Amid Volcanic Unrest

Legazpi city: About 1,000 farmers impacted by the volcanic activities of Mayon Volcano received rice assistance from Japan Tobacco International (JTI) and the city government during a distribution event in Barangay Mabinit. The aid was part of ongoing relief efforts to support those affected by ashfall and the ongoing volcanic unrest.

According to Philippines News Agency, the beneficiaries, predominantly vegetable and coconut farmers from Mabinit, Bog±a, Matanag, Buyoan, and Padang, were each provided with 5 kilograms of rice. The City Agriculture Office reported that 270 beneficiaries were from Mabinit, 295 from Bog±a, 130 from Matanag, 215 from Buyoan, and 90 from Padang.

City Agriculturist Sheila Nas highlighted the severe impact on farming activities, noting that many farmers have been unable to plant since the unrest began, with existing crops damaged by ashfall. "This 5-kg. bag of rice may seem small, but it is already a big help for their families," she stated. Nas emphasized the city government's commitment to assist and prepare rehabilitation programs for affected farmers once volcanic activity stabilizes.

Nas mentioned additional assistance programs, such as the Presidential Assistance for Farmers and Fisherfolk program, which offers rice farmers PHP2,395 in cash aid. JTI's area commercial sales manager, Miki Dipasupil, expressed the company's initiative to support communities affected by the volcanic activity, aiming to give back and support those impacted by the eruption.

In another relief effort, 201 families temporarily housed at evacuation centers in Camalig received food packs and bottled water from the Energy Development Corp. and First Gen Corp. Renewables Geothermal. These families, comprising 718 individuals, were evacuated to the Tagaytay and Camalig Bungkaras Evacuation Centers.

Mayor Carlos Irwin Baldo Jr. expressed gratitude to the companies for their continuous coordination and support. Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a warning about potential steam-driven eruptions at Bulusan Volcano, following a significant increase in volcanic earthquakes. The Bulusan Volcano Network recorded 442 volcano-tectonic earthquakes, with ground deformation data indicating slow pressurization.

Phivolcs maintains Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest) for Bulusan Volcano, advising caution due to possible steam-driven eruptions.
